Architect: Károly Weichinger
Győr, 1893 – Budapest 1982, architect, Kossuth prize laureate, university professor
He studied at the Budapest Technical University and graduated there in 1920. From 1921 to 1944 he was the professor of the architectural department of the National Arts School. He taught building structures and drawing and a new subject introduced by him: architectural water-colour painting. He was a master of the former. In 1945 he became the head of the Urban Construction Department of the Budapest University of Technology, then of the Department of Public Building Planning.
During the period of his university professorship he, together with the excellent teachers gathered by him, educated numerous generations of talented architects. He also continued scientific activities in the subject of „study of esthetic categories in architectural and engineering works”.
His architectural style is diversified: in the beginning it was close to baroque, then art déco, mostly modern, but he represented a subdued, frequently romantic variety of modernism better linked to the place and traditions. He prepared several plans for town planning together with other architects (Pécs, Győr). In the 1930s he made plans for family houses, as well. His activity in designing public buildings and churches is also significant (cemetary chapel and Paulist church in Pécs, Paulist closter at the foot of Gellért Hill, gymnasium in Mászáros street). He was awarded a Kossuth prize in 1954 and a posthumus Ybl prize in 2010.
